The new Toyota GR Yaris will start being delivered to its first customers very soon. This information was revealed in the beginning of the year at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2020. The vehicle incorporates a lot of expertise taken from WRC (World Rally Championship) to bring a real sports car feeling every day.
Powertrain and drivetrain
The 2020 GR Yaris has the world’s most powerful production 3-cylinder, motorsport 1.6-liter turbo-charged engine to produce the following output:
The power and torque are received by a six-speed manual gearbox, which is the only option at this moment. Unfortunately, there are therefore no paddle shifts.
After the gearbox, the power reaches the first sports AWD system from Toyota in 20 years: GR-FOUR debuting in the 2020 Toyota GR Yaris. It is claimed to be the lightest 4WD system on the market. What is more, it is quite sophisticated and well-developed drivetrain option which has 3 different modes:
Normal mode: torque split 60:40 (front to rear)
Sport mode: 30:70
Track mode: 50:50
Outside, the vehicle is quite low and wide. It has an aerodynamic shape which makes it quite curvy but also lightweight.
Some of the exterior features are:
- Carbon fiber roof wrap
- Dual exhaust pipes
- Black rear spoiler
- Auto headlights
- Follow-me-home headlights
- Auto wipers
Stepping inside, the seats are high which is a normal thing for a rally car and the sport-style steering wheel is made out of leather. There is an 8-inch multimedia system on the central console which can be integrated with a smartphone (Android & iOS).
In the rear, head and legroom is very limited. Unfortunately, the trunk is not so big either with its 174-liter of volume.
Auto Trendy’s take:
For us, at Auto Trendy, it is really exciting to see such sport technology being incorporated for the first time in such a small car like the Toyota GR Yaris. The car is quite multifunctional and can be used as your daily vehicle at the same time. So… isn’t that a good choice for the car enthusiasts?
