Toyota has unveiled the new GR Corolla sports car in Long Beach, California. The most potent modification of the Japanese model relies on a 3-cylinder 1.6-liter turbo engine with 300 horsepower and a maximum torque of 370 Nm (designation – G16E-GTS), combined with 4x4 drive. The hot hatch will be offered only with a 6-speed manual transmission – even for the US market, customers will not be able to order automatic. It is unknown at this time whether the "runner" will be released on the European market, where it would compete with the Volkswagen Golf R.
The intelligent dual drive system will be able to send up to 60% of the thrust to the front axle or up to 70% to the rear. In fact, the driver will be able to choose the power distribution between the front and rear wheels in three configurations – 60/40, 50/50 or 30/70. Thanks to this, Toyota promises a top experience behind the wheel. In the special version Circuit Edition GR Corolla will be equipped with front and rear LSD (Limited Slip Differential) torque differentials.
Auto Trendy’s take:
Japanese manufacturers have been famous for their high revving engines which produce much horsepower from low volume, and the new Corolla GR definitely has that signature under its hood. We, at Auto Trendy, tend to believe that the combination of 300 hp 3-cylinder 1.6-liter engine and an intelligent drive system on the Corolla GR would mean a very light, quick, dynamic, and stable vehicle in terms of road performance. We would love to get a test drive in it! What about you?
