LeasePlan, the world’s largest Cas-as-a-Service (CaaS) company has just reserved 5000 Lightyear cars. CaaS is similar to car leasing, but gives the driver more flexibility around their plan. The company is no stranger to using startup manufacturers’ vehicles as can be seen by their order from Arrival.

Lightyear produces ultra-efficient electric cars that use innovative aerodynamic design along with solar on-the-go charging to allow for 725 km of driving range. At least the current Lightyear One does. LeasePlan reserved 5000 Lightyear Two cars. Although similar, the range is slightly lower on the Two, however, the cost is far lower. The Two is set to come out in 2025, so that is probably when LeasePlan will add these cars to the company’s fleet.

Auto Trendy’s take:

This is great news for Lightyear. Being so new, the company still needs to prove itself within the market. A 5000 car order will help showcase the car publicly under varied conditions and show their true quality. Hopefully for Lightyear, many more orders will come in and the capacity for production will also be available.
