Mobility is not only about cars. It’s about transportation. A mobility trend that is often discussed is ridesharing, which is the idea that a transport vehicle will not be owned, but rather utilized by anyone who needs it, whenever they need it. Uber is a good example of this concept. Podbike developed a covered rain-resistant electric bicycle for this very purpose.
Where their vision becomes interesting is with their plans for the future. According to them, the future iterations of their vehicle will be fully autonomous and self-charging. Instead of hailing a taxi, the user would order a Podbike velomobile which will drive itself to the person in need, drive them to their desired location, park itself, and even charge itself.
Auto Trendy’s take:
The idea of ridesharing of cars is not a new concept and neither is ridesharing of bicycles as can already be seeing increasing in popularity in cities such as Tel Aviv over the past several years. An autonomous bicycle, however, is not a common talked about concept. It could definitely be the perfect solution for avoiding traffic in congested areas while still having the luxury of being driven around like in a taxi. Currently the Podbike is only targeting passengers, but it would be interesting to see if they will choose to target other markets in the future as well.
