Braathens is a Scandanavian commercial airline that is working on some exciting innovations. Using ATR’s 72-600 prototype aircraft and fuel from Neste, Braathens was able to set a world record. The three companies share the achievement of flying the first flight in history using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Neste produces fuels and used the MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ for this flight. This specific fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions over the fuel life cycle by up to 80% in comparison to average jet fuels. The flight lasted about an hour and 20 minutes and took place between Malmö, a coastal city in southern Sweden, to Bromma near Stockholm.
Auto Trendy’s take:
SAF seems to be becoming a fuel of choice. Not yet for use in the aviation industry – but for future use. Of course there are still developments to be made to ensure the safety and reliability of such fuels, but it is clear that it is a preferred method for multiple key industry players. Neste and ATR have innovated products that enable such a reality and Braathens has enabled them to have their deserved visibility.
