Chinese manufacturer NIO has been making headlines regarding its quick success in the electric vehicle market. Founded in 2014, NIO already has a sizable market share in the Chinese market and is making headlines abroad. Although most of the development is done in China, NIO’s design team is located in Munich with the goal of giving its cars the classic German aesthetic.
NIO already has three SUV models and will be debuting a flagship sedan model on the upcoming Saturday (January 9th). Not much information is out there, other than the images of the sedan and a 150 kWh battery pack. Reports say that the range is likely to exceed 600-800 km given the battery pack capacity. NIO has a battery-swapping functionality on their cars which enables users to swap out batteries in under three minutes, so although the range may be 600-800 km, one could keep driving for longer after a quick swap.
Auto Trendy’s take:
We are waiting in anticipation to see the debut and hear the technical specifications of NIO’s new sedan. Whether a range higher than 800 km is even necessary is a good question, however, the battery swap could work as a convenient replacement to waiting for the car to charge, which takes much longer. NIO has been releasing well designed EVs at reasonable prices and it will be interesting to see if and how the company will expand outside of China and if the new sedan would be a key product for such a task.
