Cummins and Kalmar are working together to bring electric terminal tractors to the market. A terminal tractor is a very specific type of truck which is used to pick up, move, and drop-off cargo at ports. They can be recognized due to their half cabin, which looks as if there is no need for any seats other than that of the driver’s.
The new vehicle will use Cummins’ PowerDriveTM 8000 electric powertrain. This powertrain will be powered by 182 kWh fast-charging batteries that Cummins will provide. Furthermore, the vehicle’s gross weight would range at 80,000 – 195,000 lbs. (36287 – 88450 kg). Testing of the terminal tractor will begin in 2022.
Auto Trendy’s take:
At some ports, processes could be happening 24/7. That’s how you get your packages so fast!
The fast-charging technology of Cummins could help these processes happen even faster. With fast-charging and correct planning around the charging, these tractors could potentially be running almost non-stop. With a great increase in operational efficiency, it is easy to see why Kalmar would be excited for this project with Cummins.
