Wireless chargers are becoming more and more common. They are already household items in terms of phones, but what about cars? Auto Trendy has already discussed wireless charging pads; however, these can only be used when the vehicle is parked. Swedish company Elonroad is revolutionizing the electric vehicle charging game with their never before seen wireless chargers that work on the go.

The system works by installing a slim conductive rail on top of road asphalt and a conduction pic up device that is attached to the underside of the vehicle. The simple fact that the rail is installed on top of the asphalt rather than under it, means that implementing this infrastructure will be easy and far more cost effective than rebuilding the roads. Charging will only be activated when there is a car on top of the rail, which will keep the roads safe for pedestrians. As this is a new technology, it is important to note that according to Elonroad, it is still functioning efficiently with a power transfer efficiency of 97%.

Elonroad is already getting started with implementing their new infrastructure technology and are opening their first public electric road in Lund, Sweden to run between 2020 and 2022. They call this road EVolutionRoad.

Auto Trendy’s take:

Elonroad gives a new meaning to ease of on-the-go charging. If their technology becomes the new norm, electric cars will not need to use the same big heavy batteries that they use today. With the new space available from the lack of a bulky battery, passenger cars will be much more spacious and electric trucks will be able to carry much higher payloads. As this is still quite new, it would be interesting to see how EVolutionRoad will perform and if other cities follow suit.
