Autonomous vehicles are hitting our roads faster than we expected. By the end of the year, Knight-Swift – one of the largest transporation companies – will own self-driving trucks. The company has placed the order from Embark Trucks. Embark does not manufacture trucks, but equips them with self-driving technology.
Knight-Swift will now be the first company with self-driving tractor trucks within its fleet. The purchase was made as part of a collaboration with Embark called “Truck Transfer Program.” In this program, drivers will still be sitting behind the wheels of the autonomous trucks. Data will be collected regarding their usage and the technology’s performance.
Auto Trendy’s take:
The self-driving technology has been on its way for a while. Now it’s finally hitting the road for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Steps like these are exactly what is needed to prove the technology, improve upon it, and gain correct legislation. Many of the self-driving truck stories that we write about happen in the American market. Hopefully, this technology’s safety could be proven over there and be brought into operation within the European market soon.
