McLaren has issued a recall regarding a safety problem with the sport series 570GT, the super series 720S, the ultimate series Senna and the NEW GT.
The file was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 27, 2020.
It is a Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) engineering issue. The problematic component is the foam pad below the fuel tank which is prone to retain moisture and corrode the fuel tank, potentially causing a fuel leak. A possible consequence is fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source, therefore increasing the risk of fire.
McLaren is recalling some 2016-2020 720S, 2019 Senna, 2020 GT, and 2017-2019 570GT vehicles.
It is not known when the owners will be notified yet, but once it is done, they are going to be asked to go to their local dealers. Then, the foam pad will be removed, the fuel tank will be inspected for corrosion and the whole tank will be replaced if it is leaking.
Auto Trendy’s take:
Cases like this are showing us that despite being automotive engineers, we are humans after all and we do make mistakes. Most of the time, that is how we learn in life. We truly believe that McLaren will make a good life lesson out of this and it will be able to make its amazing products even better in the future.
