Northvolt is not slowing down with its expansion. The Swedish manufacturer has strong ties to the Volkswagen Group and has been erecting battery-related Gigafactories over the past few years. Being in the business of sustainability, Northvolt’s new factory brings life back to a closed-down paper mill, which is expected to operate using 100% clean energy.

It will become operational in 2024 and will produce cathode material. Cathode materials are made out of metal and lithium which are needed for automotive batteries. This material will then be sent to Northvolt’s other facilities for full battery assembly.

Auto Trendy’s take:

Northvolt’s accelerated growth shows a lot of trust from its investors. The Volkswagen Group is one of the major investors and is likely supporting the company to the extent that it is in order to secure a strategic electrification partner. Northvolt is taking the necessary steps to secure itself as a major force of electrification with its research, technology, and capacity in this new and rapidly growing field.
