Northvolt, the European producer/supplier of battery cells and systems has achieved a great feat in the name of sustainability. The company has announced that it has successfully produced the world’s first fully-recycled battery. This battery is made from nickel, manganese, and cobalt. What Northvolt noticed is that 95% of the metals that are in a battery can be recycled to a virgin-material state.
The entire process of recycling and manufacturing the battery happened at one single facility. With this achievement, Northvolt aims to eventually recycle 125,000 tons per year and produce batteries that contain 50% recycled materials by 2030. Having the Volkswagen partnership of erecting a battery Gigafactory will certainly help in achieving such a goal.
Auto Trendy’s take:
Northvolt has taken a spectacular step forward for sustainability in manufacturing. Of course, it is believed that electric cars are more sustainable than combustion engines, but few address the issue of the batteries’ lack of recyclability. Northvolt has rightfully taken the challenge into its hands and added another piece in the puzzle of green driving.
