Founded in 2008, Protean has been working on the development and innovation of in-wheel motors. Although there are several competitors out there, Protean has an incredible amount of experience with over 2 million kilometers driven.

The company’s goal is to maximize efficiency by reducing the drivetrain components needed to transfer rotational energy before getting to the wheels. Having said that, Protean does have two model options for their flagship motor, the ProteanDrive. These are their specs:

Protean has expanded its longstanding partnership with Local Motors for its Olli vehicle. Auto Trendy has written multiple articles about Olli, the autonomous shuttle that is already driving on several routes throughout the United States. The new deal has a timeframe of three years and is valued at $7.3 million. Protean will be in charge of equipping the new Olli 2.0 with its in-wheel motors.

Auto Trendy’s take:

Protean has a versatile solution that is viable for multiple types of vehicles. The extensive experience, paired with partnerships with innovative companies, is securing the company’s future in this rapidly transforming industry. With in-wheel motors becoming a possibility for any form of car, and some publicized functional expertise, Protean seems to have a bright future as one of the in-wheel motor industry leaders.
