Shell has built one of the world’s largest electrolysers with a production capacity of 20 MW. An electrolyser works by breaking water (H2O) into Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O). Thus, it is a green method of producing hydrogen.

This electrolyser was built as part of Shell’s partnership with Zhangjiakou City Transport Construction Investment Holding Group. It is supplying hydrogen to fuel cell vehicles at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Shell is not stopping at this production capacity and plans to have an electrolyser with a capacity of 60 MW within the coming 2 years.

Auto Trendy’s take:

This is a win-win for Shell and for the city of Zhangjiakou. One is getting the recognition for its innovations while the other gets the benefit of clean transport. China is decarbonizing and it would be interesting to see how involved Shell is going to be in making that happen.
