Mercedes is embarking on a new path with the next generation of the Citan. In the future, the high-roofed van will be available in two versions: as a T-Class or as an all-electric EQT. The EQT will act as a private car or as a light truck. Both Citans will be launched with an electric drive that is known as “eCitan”. On August 25, 2021, Mercedes will present the working version. There is already a first teaser and some official information about the second generation of the model.
The design seems to be moving away from that of Renault Kangoo
The new Citan will also be the result of Mercedes’ alliance with Renault, but the first photo reveals that Benz is moving away from using identical equipment to the Kangoo. The design looks cleaner and less playful, the shape resembles a V-Class, and the front can easily be mistaken for a current Mercedes SUV. A new light signature with two horizontal stripes on top of each other at the top of the narrower headlights is the main focus in the appearance. The radiator grille obviously looks bigger and extends lower. Probably the teaser presents a version of an internal combustion engine, as the grille is not closed.
eCitan with an autonomous mileage of about 265 kilometers
Neither a Widescreen infotainment system nor a digital a cockpit are expected in the interior. The engines will be the same as the Kangoo Rapid - a 1.3-liter gasoline engine with two power levels, 102 or 130 hp and 1.5-liter diesel, also available in two versions with 75 or 95 hp. The power transmission is always taken care of by a 6-speed manual transmission. Mercedes eCitan should use the drive of the Kangoо Rapid E-Tech Electric, which will be launched in 2022. With it, the drive is entrusted to an electric motor with a capacity of 102 hp and a battery with a capacity of 44 kWh, which should allow a range of about 265 km.
Auto Trendy’s take:
The eCitan can be seen as an example of premium brand cars being used to introduce electric driving and change people’s perception about it. In other words, having a well-built image to ensure end users about their purchase of an innovative car and make them feel more trustworthy. The released teasers so far promise a lot! At Auto Trendy, we will make sure to keep our eyes open for new updates; stay tuned!
