Volkswagen is completely revolutionizing its manufacturing strategy. The German giant owns the brands Volkswagen, Skoda, and SEAT. Starting in 2023, these brands will only have electric cars produced in Europe – none with internal combustion engines.
The product line is also optimized with the model range drastically decreasing. Furthermore, the models will move onto a mutual platform design and each of Volkswagen’s platforms will have its own dedicated factory. To make this easier, all models’ battery chemistry will also be standardized.
Auto Trendy’s take:
This is an extremely intelligent move by Volkswagen. Both from the perspective of model range as well as battery chemistry, Volkswagen will need far less parts to be designed and integrated for each car. This means that the parts that are still being purchased will have immense order volume increase to Volkswagen tier suppliers which will lead to great cost benefits.
