Will there be a Golf 9?

Will there be a Golf 9? With the planned Euro 7 emissions standard and the growing importance of electric mobility, the Golf's future is unclear.

Will the Golf 9 make an appearance? VW does not see internal combustion engines as a low-cost alternative to electric mobility in the medium term. Also, because of the future Euro 7 norm, higher prices are expected. Therefore, Volkswagen questions the future of the Golf – whether the current Golf 8 will have a successor is not yet clear.

Due to the introduction of the new Euro 7 emissions standard, VW expects the more complex exhaust gas cleaning to raise the price of a car by 3,000 to 5,000 euros. In small cars it will hardly be worth it – the costs and the base price will be too high.

From 2025, electric small cars are expected to appear on the market – in addition to the ID.2, there will be more models from VW, Skoda, Seat and Cupra. With base prices of around €25,000, electric mobility should become more attractive. The range of these electric cars should be around 350 to 400 kilometers – at the moment this is a psychological stumbling block.

Therefore, it is not yet clear whether the best-selling car in Europe, the Golf, will receive a successor. Currently in Wolfsburg they are working on the facelift of the current Golf 8.

Auto Trendy’s take:

We, at Auto Trendy, are not quite surprised by news like these. It has been obvious to us that a transition like the one to electric vehicles will be crossing many bumpy roads. In the VW case, we are talking about a potential phasing out of the best-selling car in Europe, which might even be a sign that electrification of the automotive industry is being forced by governments. We hope that this is all for good.
