The industry of passenger cars is likely heading in the direction of non-ownership. This means that most drivers will become riders and utilize some kind of ridesharing or taxi-like system to get around. Currently, companies like Uber are leading the market for ridesharing and are even developing their own technologies to stay relevant for upcoming decades.

Zoox is a California-based autonomous vehicle company that was founded in 2014 and acquired by Amazon in 2020. They specifically develop their technologies for riders rather than drivers. So far, they have built cars from the ground up which include not only the autonomous software, but also unique robotics that are perfectly designed for autonomous driving. Their promising technology can already be seen driving through complex maneuvers and perfectly dealing with surprise on-road pedestrians.

Auto Trendy’s take:

With the future very clearly heading in the direction of riding over sharing, it is exciting to learn about a company who already understood this back in 2014. Their technology is impressive, and their acquisition by Amazon is thrilling. Other than Zoox having their new technologies hitting the road, this is more proof of Amazon’s plans of taking over the automotive sector. Would Amazon be using Zoox for their distribution needs or will they be releasing passenger cars too? Only time will tell, and it will definitely be exciting to report on the answer to this question when it finally comes out!
